What gives!? Well, faithful reader(s), I think I lost my focus. Maybe I was hard up for new topics. Or, perhaps, the weather got nice and I started enjoying the summer. Glass of wine on a patio with a friend after work, or write a new blog post? Some people can do both. I however, did not.

But now I'm back! I have the time to blog. I have some desire. But I'm currently lacking a focus. Do I share things of interest to me? Do I update readers on things that are happening in my life? Do I continue to share new music and elicit your recommendations? The answer, for the moment, appears to be "yes."

So, without further hesitation, I present my return to the blogosphere.

------------------------------------------------------

I'm writing while working at Joe's Wine and Spirits, hence the post's title. I'm working really hard not to spend more than I make, but without an employee discount, it isn't that difficult to refrain from buying booze. Slide on out to the Cherry Hill and let me help you pick out something delicious! Currently, I'm recommending The Show, a powerful Cabernet at a brilliant price. Also, I really like Rock Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc for a nice, crisp white for finishing up our blackberry summer.

I'm working a PT job, in part, to pad the bank account so Shannan and I can enjoy our trip to Akumal, Mexico. It's been awhile since I've been on a proper vacation. I think the week we spend at our quaint little getaway will more than catch me up. I've never been out of the country, so I had to go through all the hoops to get my passport. Looks like it will be worth it - I can't wait.

I've been very interested in finding new recipes lately. The other night, I made a delicious Farfalle Pasta with Zucchini and Gorgonzola. I cannot stress how easy this was to cook! Very delicious. Tomorrow night, I'm going to try my hand at making Porkchops with Mushroom Bourbon Cream Sauce. The recipe calls for both white wine AND bourbon. Hello Rock Rabbit and Ten High! What was I saying about trying to refrain from buying booze?

Finally, let's close with some new tunes in my library, and a call for a few from you. Currently, I'm really enjoying:

"Sugarfoot" by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears
"Love Vigilantes" by Iron and Wine
"Magick" by Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
"You are the Best Thing" by Ray Lamontagne
"The Great Defector" by Bell X1. I'm sure all my devoted readers (both of you) are on the edge of your seats in anticipation.

Hopefully you'll have a reward in the form of a new post this evening!

Cheers,

Nk

Share the Grooves!

So, this topic is a remnant from something I used to blog about on MySpace. Here's how it goes:

1) I scour my sources for tunes I like that you may not have heard.
2) You check them out and either like them or dislike them.
3) You share your opinion on my comment page.
4) You add a couple new, interesting songs that are occupying your recent playlists.
5) We both enjoy new music!

Here's what's playing on my iTunes...

Brett Dennen - "The One You Love the Most"
I've shared some Brett before, and this is more of the same. His voice is very unique, his hooks are catchy, and his music is upbeat and optimistic. The perfect start to summer.

Landon Pigg - "Falling Love in a Coffee Shop"
This is the first time I've heard Landon, and his haunting opening to this song hooked me instantly. The subtleness and simplicity of the rest of the song, coupled with how the music unfolds is comforting. I want to be singing this song...

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - "Apologies"
Where has Grace been all of my life? Finding this little nugget of beauty felt like the first time I discovered a Regina Spektor song. It spoke to me. She is vulnerable. We are vulnerable. I am vulnerable. Maybe she will speak to you?

Sam Cooke - "A Change is Gonna Come"
Okay, so this isn't a new song. It's old. The singer has come and gone. The style is reminiscent of days past. Despite all those things, Sam Cooke's haunting, soulful, aching song feels more prescient than ever. Does it relate to observations about our current political happenings? Does it relate to coming out of winter, into spring, and enjoying summer? Does it portend me "turning a corner" in life? I don't know, but Sam speaks directly to us still, and it couldn't be more meaningful.

John Mayer - "Gravity"
This song isn't quite so new either, but makes the list as being new on my radar and for it's serendipitous timing. After having a bad day, a piss-pour workout, I drive home, pop on my favorite XM channel and John Mayer encompasses my mood in one line "Gravity...is working against me, and gravity, wants to bring me down."

Take a second and check these out if you like, but I'm really interested to hear what's gracing your playlists lately - summer is nearly upon us and there should be some good new tunes out there for us all to find!

Sippin' on some ...

I was able to weave the word "usurp" into a normal work email today. It wasn't that difficult either! Once I got past the third day, I kinda forgot I even drank it. I guess my moments of weakness to conquer were :

1) Mountain Dew in the mornings. Loved my small coffee cup full of neon yellow goodness.

2) Coca-Cola Classic on Fridays with my lunch at Booche's. For some reason, the Coke at Booche's is immaculate.

3) Coke just about at any time during the day. Man it just hits the spot.

So, when I think about it, my consumption was way down from where it used to be, but a week without it is definitely a big thing for me! If I can get to one more week without it, then the third week should be pretty easy as I'll be in Miami staying with Jessica. She doesn't drink it and has vowed not to let me drink it, so we'll see what happens!

* So, I get to "one week without soda" on a technicality. Today at The Deuce Pub and Pit, I asked our server if they had lemonade. She told me they did, so I ordered one. After that, I decided to get an Arnold Palmer, which is lemonade and tea. After downing a couple of those while playing washers and experiencing a change in waitresses, I find out that no, they don't actually have lemonade. I've been drinking a concoction of tea, sprite, and sour. WTF. So, I ran the rules by my friend and he decided that since I didn't order soda and I unknowingly drank it as a mix in something, then the streak gets to continue. Booyah suckas.

Monday Musings

I like to start the week dishing out (what I find to be) some useful information. Maybe you'll find it useful too!

The blog PickTheBrain talks about How To Prepare Healthy Meals Faster Than You Can Order Takeout. Keys include creating a routine, making simpler meals, cooking several things at once, and eating the same things more often. This works for me during the week because I'm single, like to work out until about 6:30, don't have extraneous time to cook extravagently, and also don't mind eating leftovers. I like to save more elaborate meals for the weekend and recruit friends to help with the menu. Instant get-together!

If you're into meditation, you'll find a good primer at GoodLife Zen. They share Ten Important Tips To Start Meditating. Whether you believe in this stuff or think it is all a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, it will help you focus more on the present, which I think is a good thing.

Finally, the folks over at the Freakonomics blog pose a simple question - What's The Smartest Way To Spend Your Rebate? Being in the savings/finance/investing field, my natural inclination is to say put it in savings or pay down debt! However, last time I checked I was in the human/fun/spending crowd as well - tough choices! But, if you're gonna blow it on something big, watch that you don't use that $600 as an excuse to spend an extra $600 you don't have. If it wasn't in your budget before you had the $600, chances are it still isn't in your budget! As for me, I think I will use most of it to pay down debt and the rest as going-out money in Miami for my budgeted vacation to see my best friend from college. I can already taste the ice cold adult beverages on South Beach...

Your turn to share - How will you be spending your rebate?

Enjoying Sunday

Hey everyone - sporadic blogging lately. I'll do my best to remedy that. For now, enjoy a Zen-inspired post...

Today, Sunday, April 20th, was a fantastically productive day. I woke around 1100 - later than I wanted - but still in time do get breakfast, shower, and start my day with plenty of time to get things done. I started working in the yard around noon. I mowed, dethatched, raked, mowed again, mulched, and did a final mow with the bagger to get everything cleaned from the yard. First mow for the spring, so it needed it. The backyard will hopefully dry out by next weekend.

Then, I went shopping for groceries. I had no list, which could have been dangerous, but I didn't spend too much. I got a steak for tonight, and some stuff for the week. I decided as I was cooking that I would sit at my kitchen table and eat. Usually, I sit in front of the TV and mindlessly eat while I watch similarly mindless TV. Not tonight. I've been reading a lot of things about "being present" and being focused on what I'm doing that instant. I decided to turn off all electronics, cook my meal, and enjoy - nay, savor - every moment. This is how it started:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_4N_8EKWoQpI/SAv0Hf44-lI/AAAAAAAAACU/H2VngGvukh8/s200/DSC02753.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191511405131004498" />

Perfect weather for a grilled KC strip steak. I added a couple small ears of corn on the cob, and finished with a mix of sauteed vegetables. Pair it with a nice Cab Sauv, and it turned out very nicely.

So, I sat at my table sans distractions and enjoyed my food. I'd be lying if I said I had any major epiphanies - I didn't think about my lot in the world, how to end hunger, or about the past or future. All I thought about was now. How does this steak taste NOW? How do the vegetables taste NOW? This corn tastes great NOW.

If I could give everyone one recommendation for this week, it would be to eat a meal while being focused on the present. Eat your food and have no other distractions. We have so many things vying for our attention in a given week - workouts, work, friends, TV, computer, web, blogging, news...the list goes on and on. Stop giving time to distractions for one night - think about the food - be it steak, etc... or whatever you like to make. I promise it will be one of the best meals you've had in a long time!

Weekly Goals

Hey everyone - before I do another update on my yearly goals, I thought I'd throw some weekly goals out there. Maybe you all can help hold me accountable! I have a health evaluation on Wednesday - free through work. They take my blood and give me back some numbers. Fun times. I don't think there is much else to it. If I get back some good info, I'll be sure to post it here.

As always, if you have any issues, insights, or comments, please let me know!

Weekly Goals:

Work out 5 days - spinning, weights, and running. I've done 4 no problem, but Friday has proved to be elusive. I'm hoping that I can get up early Tuesday and Friday and lift.

Eat out only on Tuesday night - IRA season is over Tuesday and our department will celebrate by going to Flat Branch. I'll enjoy some appetizers and maybe imbibe, but I'll control myself.

Meditate - This is a new one. Does anyone that reads my blog actually do this? I may have to consult some of my resources before getting back into this one, but I'd like to focus on being more mindful of myself and being present in the moment. I tend to worry about the future and focus on negative actions from my past instead of enjoying now.

Do something social during the week - I tend to get home from working out after work and just lay around the house. I find it funny that I have to tell myself to be social these days. Nick - GET OFF YOUR ARSE! SHOWER! TALK TO INTERESTING PEOPLE!

Blog - I owe you all the rest of my quarterly update!

Breathe in. Breathe out.

There you go!

Quarterly Update #1

Sorry for the previous post, but it was necessary. If you want to know why, ask James Joyce or perhaps find the significance of his last chapter. Moving on -

So, way back when, I posted my resolutions and goals for 2008. We're 3 months into 2008, and since I do this in business, I thought it was only fitting that I give everyone a quarterly update as to my progress on these goals!

I had essentially 5 areas that I wanted to focus on in 2008 :

- Financial
- Physical
- Professional
- Charitable
- Personal

I've decided to update one at a time so I don't overwhelm my large readership... Let's start with the one where I feel I've had the most success - Physical.

Here are the general goal-concepts and corresponding updates:

Goal: Begin Training for a 5k.
Update: If you watch this blog, you'll know that I did not walk. I completed my first 5k in a personal best time of 31:57. And I'm not done. I'm running more 5k races. I enjoy running. I've got a great support network for this, and have to say this goal is 100% complete!

Goal: Resume weight training at Key Largo.
Update: I lift at least twice a week now - Mondays and Wednesdays - and have begun to see some results:
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_4N_8EKWoQpI/R_RGyzWh-9I/AAAAAAAAACM/KnY27IB-354/s200/Musclehead.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184846909602397138" /> Okay, as you can tell, that picture is not me. I certainly don't wear underwear that tight. Anymore.
However, I've dropped about 8 pounds with weight and cardio training, am down a couple of inches on my waist, and have dropped a meaningful percentage of body fat. This one is a work in progress, and again, I need to thank my support crew who faithfully shows up to the gym with me! Thanks!

Goal: Expand healthy eating habits.
Update: This one is not 100% good. I'd say I've made vast improvements over my previous eating habits, and I really like everything I eat. Variety is a bit low right now, but I'm slowly adding to my healthy repertoire. I eat a low-cal, high protein, high fiber breakfast, have an apple a day, eat a reasonable lunch (most of the time) and then have a high protein snack before hitting the gym. I feel good about that. I'm getting much better on making dinners for the week, but slide off the healthy horse on the weekends. Anyone got recommendations here? Oh, and I still go out to lunch once a week. Usually Booche's on Friday, but that has varied lately. This is non-negotiable. One thing I'd like to remove from consumption is soda. I have less than 12 ounces a day, but that's 12 ounces (and around 200 empty calories) I could eliminate. It's just so tasty!

Goal: Add/explore daily vitamins and supplements
Update: Zero percent to goal on this one for 2008. I take some vitamin B6 occasionally, but it's expired. What's the shelf life on these things? I bet they just start to lose their effectiveness. At any rate, I've asked for some help and guidance in this area from a very knowledgeable friend, and hopefully I'll have a better update next time.

That's my story. You've read my update. A lot of you have given me encouragement and support along the way. I really appreciate it! I've learned a lot and really feel like 2008 has been a fabulous year so far for me - in all areas I'm trying to improve.

Now, how are you doing? What are you doing in 2008 to be healthier? Even if you're doing nothing - share!

Hiatus is over!

Okay - 2+ weeks away from blogging and I'm back. But, it feels like only one long day...

I last dropped thoughts onto this page yes in a post-race endorphin buzz and I hate to admit not that much has happened in my absence except we had a great month yes at work that came to a close nearly one week ago although we won't reap the benefits of our work until next Friday which will most likely be too late for me to enjoy this weekend thoroughly because I'll be going to Kansas City yes to go to the wedding of my best friend from elementary school whom I have not seen in many months because I missed him last time I was in Kansas City while I was sick even though I attended my own surprise birthday party throw by a few of my friends, one of which might be stopping into town yes on Friday which would be pretty neat because this is a friend I enjoy bantering with back and forth and although my breakfast meetings on Thursday serve as a suitable replacement it is just different enough to make me wish we were back in the same city where we could have impromptu get-togethers like the old times in college when I didn't work out as much as I am currently because I didn't have the focus on health that I currently have guiding me to create healthier dinners and workout quite a bit more like this week when I did spinning for the first time and ran another 1 2 3 4 5k and even found time to hit the weight room to try and help lower my weight which has come down yes but is holding pretty steady at the current level I am enjoying because it seems to be going well and being noticed by the opposite sex yes and has given me energy to do things I could not do before and has created focus and drive in my daily life translating into more efficient sleeping and scheduling of activities and even has allowed me to finish some books I have been wanting to read for some time including The Road by Cormac McCarthy during which I cried twice and I feel is the best book I have ever read even though I have yes just begun to read perhaps the best book of all time to which this post yes is alluding and when I use the word allude it reminds me that my friend asked me to write yes a euphemistic post yes perhaps detailing or spelling out my weekend exploits so yes I said yes I will Yes.

5K - 31:57

I did not walk.

That would be the first thing I would tell anyone if they inquired about my first 5k. I did not walk. Today was the big day. The day I've been training toward since the first of the year. A goal that seemed too far away to be real. A race my friends and I discussed numerous times over breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Would it ever get here? Yes, and I did not walk.

January's bitter cold was the antithesis of outside running. I tried jogging outside a few blocks in what seemed to be a warmer February. My lungs seized up from the bitter cold; I was defeated. But today, I did not walk. After 3 months of consistent training with weights and running on a treadmill, after shaving off several pounds, after reducing my body fat by more than 5%, I ran in the 2008 Columbia St. Patrick's Day Race.

It'd be easy for me to say that the reason I did not walk was because I had worked hard for three months, pushing myself, dedicating time, energy and focus toward my goal. But to say such a thing would be minimizing the HUGE impact of all those who have been a part of this from the start. No, I'm not going to start of by giving the cliche Oscar-esque speech. This may be sappy, but if I were to single a few people out of the numerous supporters along the way -

Stephen P: Day in and day out, you reminded my of building toward my goal. You gave me tools to track my progress and inspiration to keep me on track. Seeing your progress and hearing you talk about all your race times and experiences solidified in my mind that I can, in fact, run a 5k and not die.

Rob P: When I said I wanted to finish in under 45 minutes, you laughed. When I said I wanted to finish in under 38, you scoffed. Under 35? You still were not happy. I ran a personal best 31:57 and I feel like I can do better. Thanks for helping me change my mindset.

Mark A: Day of the race. I start out a little overzealous, maybe a bit too confident in my abilities. Out of the gate fast, but I'm tired at the quarter mile. My pace slows. I'm jogging. People are passing me. Failure begins to creep into my brain. I hear a familiar voice from behind. You ran beside me. I wanted to stop and walk on at least 4 occasions. I just wanted to catch my breath! But no. You wouldn't let me. You knew I would finish disappointed would I have stopped to walk. You ensured my months of training ended up a success on race day. You allow me to close this blog post with a phrase that has boosted my confidence in my abilities more than anything in recent memory.

I did not walk.

Why I Love Wikipedia

"Wikipedia is the best thing ever. I love it for two reasons - it satisfies my intense curiosity for new knowledge and it allows my undiagnosed A.D.D. a safe outlet. I'm addicted to clicking on the blue links. No, I don't actually have A.D.D., but you could see where I might after seeing my most recent search history on Wikipedia.

I was watching Survivorman, and he was running from a Jaguar. I wanted to know what a Jaguar looked like and why they were so feared. Enter wikipedia. Follow my thought process.

Jaguar Wow, this guy is scary. Fast, lean, and likes an occasional swim. Jaguars are also Apex predators. Hmm, what is an Apex Predator? Follow the blue link

Apex predators pretty much kick ass. They shape their local ecological system. Not all are huge like a great white shark. They are the subject of fantastic hypothetical questions like "Who would win between a Grizzly Bear and a Tiger?" I wonder if I can find a list of all Apex Predators.

This list of Apex Predators is pretty neat. I didn't know there were so many Apex Predators. What would happen if you put them all in a hypothetical room/aquarium? I wonder who would come out. Probably not humans, which are also on the list. I wonder what wikipedia has to say about humans.

Humans are funny. This is illustrated by the funny picture of us the page. **Warning** it includes cartoon nudity. I wonder why they have that picture as an illustration for humans?

That picture is on the Pioneer Plaque, a plaque we sent into space on the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. This is a pictorial message of humanity intended for extraterrestrials. We apparently want them to know men are a happy, waving gender, characterized by bad haircuts. Women, on the other hand, are standoffish, have wide hips, and lack genitalia. We don't want to offend E.T. by making him see nudity... Also, almost no top-level scientists were able to decode this message. So, in case this one didn't work, we decided to use our super technology (at the time) to send out ...

The Voyager Golden Record. Awesome! We haven't gone platinum yet, but a golden record rocks! I had heard about this before - it's a record containing numerous things - including many songs from human history. You'll find Bach, Beethoven, and Chuck Berry, among others. Nice. According to Steve Martin on an episode of Saturday Night Live, when E.T. finds this record, their response will probably be "send more Chuck Berry."

Amen brother.

Healthy Fast Food?

So, I added some AdSense links to my blog. If you click on them, I will get money (apparently). This has not yet happened, so you must not be clicking...

Google picks these ads for me based on what is contained in my blogs. I write about eating healthy, exercise, finance, personal development, random things, etc... At any rate, I looked to see what kind of ads Google was matching to my page. Imagine my surprise when I saw this:

Healthy Fast Food
Try Wendy's New Premium Fish Fillet made w/ North Pacific Cod.
www.wendys.com

Now, I'm not sure what to make of that. First of all, gag. Second of all, is it really healthy? I decided to go to Wendy's Nutritional Facts and check it out. Wendy's happens to have a high quality site for nutrition. It doesn't let you just look at the facts in a big chart - that is not user-friendly - but rather allows you to "build" a typical meal you might eat and then see the overall nutrition you're getting (or not getting). If you eat at Wendy's ever, I recommend you check out this site. Does anyone ever visit other Fast Food websites to look at this stuff? I'd be interested to see some others. I've visited Sonic's (love their breakfast burritos) and Chipotle's (Oh wait, no nutritional facts...) and neither is very user-friendly.

Now, back to the Cod sandwich. 450 calories, 200 from fat. 22 grams of fat. 47 carbs. 1020 mg sodium. 16 g protein.
Is that healthy fast food or relatively healthy fast food? Compared to my favorite - the Spicy Chicken Sandwich - the cod sandwich almost qualifies as health food. Nearly half the calories and a third less fat than my sandwich. But alas! The Chicken Sandwich has 55 grams of protein. Take that Cod.

All this is a moot point since I eat fast "chain" food like once a month these days, but I found it very interesting. I think I'll use sites like this to build my "best option" if I do go to these places. Let's face it - fast food is cheap, convenient, and sometimes tastes like normal food. When you're drunk or hung over, it seems better than shoving $500 bills into your mouth.

Here's to drinking a ton of booze and then deciding to make healthy choices!

Ode to Paolo Nutini

"Hey, I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything is right"

Dem be my new run-eeng shoes. I wouldn't call myself a wine buff or wine snob by any means, but I would proclaim myself interested in drinking good vino. So, after making it through the WSJ article about "Open That Bottle Night," I knew I had found the reason for our next neighborhood food night.

If you collect wine, then you may have a bottle of wine that has become exalted. It is no longer fit for opening during the week. It is no longer fit for opening during a weekend dinner with friends before heading out on the town. It's purpose is to be consumed on the most special of occasions.

Long story short, "Open That Bottle Night" (OTBN) is a nationwide event held on the last Saturday in February (we went with Sunday to accommodate schedules). This is the special occasion. However you chose to celebrate, OTBN is the night you pop out that cork of that bottle you've been saving for years. Create an occasion. Create new memories. And so we did. Guests this evening - John, Kirstin, Kara, Jarad, Mark, and myself. Everyone contributed to the meal in someway (with Kara putting in much appreciated extra effort!)

On the menu -

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_4N_8EKWoQpI/R8JoAKd5dFI/AAAAAAAAAB0/8HApbLi18aw/s320/DSC02697.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5170809674193794130" />Main Course:
French Salad (light and tasty)
Lamb Chops (marinated in olive oil, rosemary, s&p. Seared then baked)
Root Vegetable Medley (Turnips, Parsnips, Fingerling Potatoes, Carrots, Onion)
Bruschetta (with feta, kalamata olives, tomatoes, and capers)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_4N_8EKWoQpI/R8JoAad5dGI/AAAAAAAAAB8/9EYwO8_3i2Q/s320/DSC02706.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5170809678488761442" />Dessert:
French Caramel Brulee

And the wines:

1998 Chateau Haut-Marbuzet. The reason for the dinner. The darling of the evening.

1996 Barbera D' Alba "Boassa." A very pleasant surprise gifted by Mark accompanied by one of the best stories of the evening.

2006 Cotes du Rhone "Reserve Perrin." The backup wine of the evening in case the others faulted. They didn't, but this one was a great finish to the evening.

So, it all sounds dorky, perhaps a bit pretentious. However, it was the efforts of all involved to bring together a spectacular dinner with good friends that made this night worth more than untold riches. Does life get any better?

Enjoy my visual recap...

<img style="float:left; I'm not looking to eat random things - one site I've come across has you eating a piece of tofu, some beans, a piece of bread, and a slice of fruit. I've got one word for that: blech.

I want something different.

I want my foods to pair well. I want them to taste good. I want to prepare them with spices. I want them to be something other people might eat as well. BUT! I want them to meet my nutritional needs. I want them to fuel my workouts, fuel my day. I want them to make me healthier (wealthier and wise might be a stretch...)

So, starting with "the most important meal of the day" - how do we build an ideal breakfast? From what I've read, it needs protein, carbs, vitamins & minerals. I've read you need .8g of protein (daily) for every kg you weigh. For me, I'd need roughly 70 grams of protein daily. Not sure on the total carbs I need, but I do know I want them to come from real things - like whole grains and/or fruits.
Vitamins and minerals seem to come along for the ride in a lot of foods, so I'll look at the store for primarily good sources of protein and carbs, and then select vitamin & mineral choices from those.

Currently, I eat a piece of whole-wheat toast with crunchy peanut butter, a cheese stick, and a small glass of milk. I enjoy it. I am go-go-go in the mornings, so I'm not looking for something immensely stimulating. I like fast. Can I have fast and healthy?

I'm off to the store to find some answers. In the mean time - what do you eat for breakfast? Is it healthy, convenient, or both?

Downhill from here?!

I ran my first 5k! I've been putting in 2.5 miles lately on the treadmill. Tonight I ran to 2.5 and started cooling down with some fast walking. I walked to 2.75 miles and noticed I still had energy. "What the heck," I said in my head, "I can get to 3.1 miles!"

And I did.

I've got my first time - 38:29. It's not world-shattering. Last week was very successful in terms of working out. Lots of miles run and some weights lifted. Nice. Also, not 24 hours after I learn of and share the concept of Rule 240 with a couple of friends does one of them actually invoke it! He called from the airport, we had a small refresher, and he got a new flight on a competitors airline. Wicked awesome! Basically, if your flight is delayed and it's not because of weather most older airlines will get you on the next competitors flight out of town - only if you tell them to "240" you!

The timing was just amazing. Literally within 24 hours, he invoked it!

Here's a little something interesting I picked up off a friend's blog. Enjoy.

1--Answer the questions below
2--Take each answer and type it into Photobucket (www.photobucket.com)
3--Take any picture from the first page of results and post. (click on the picture and copy the HTML code)
4--Based on the pictures, post your guesses as to what my answers are!

Don't explain, it's funnier that way!

1. Not that we want her to go away....but you get the picture.

I got the number of this girl that I'm into at a local hot spot. I decided I was going to kick today's ass, tired or not. I had an unbelievably productive day at work, followed by a 1.5 mile run/walk, stretching, sit-ups, back exercises, unloading the dishwasher, and a jaunt to the grocery store. I was feeling so chipper, I bought a mango. Say it with me. Mango.

Right now, I have that kind of feeling that if I attempted just about anything, I'd be successful. I just looked at the clock, and my assertion is confirmed - it is 1:29 AM. Why am I awake right now? There is nothing good on TV, I'm not doing anything, and there certainly isn't a supermodel in my bed keeping me from slumbering. I kicked her out hours ago...

Anyone have any tips or tricks that don't involve sedatives? I need to be cognizant when I wake up. I don't think I have insomnia - I think I have "too lazy to go to bed" syndrome. For those of you who have the ability to use a scroll bar, you'll see from a previous post establishing a morning routine is one of my goals in 2008. Going to bed on time, as you might imagine, is the one single thing that would really help me move this goal along. There ya are. All my debt - excluding my mortgage. Now, I need a plan to kick that debt in the debt-hole. What's the plan? Well first, I need to refi that AG loan through the City of Columbia. For those of you who don't know, I feel like I'm now officially a homeowner as I had to install all new heating and cooling in my house. Ductwork, heat pump, furnace, A/C, etc. Awesome times. Apparently people don't just give you those things for free if you're freezing in your home. Interesting.

At any rate, I have enough cash on hand to knock out the credit card debt in a month or two. No worries there. Then, it's going in the freezer. Really. After that, I think I can refi the heat loan through the City at 2-3% interest. Thank God the City is liberally green. They provide low-interest loans for these type of home improvements. Thanks Al Gore.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not crumbling under the weight of monthly payments. I can afford the current rates, but surely there is a better way, right? Combine them all at a low rate? Use the Snowball Repayment Method? Get another job? :)

If you don't have any recommendations, maybe you can at least commiserate with me?

Thursday mornings

My first song recommendation this post is a Josh Ritter song(s). This guy is amazing. If you aren't listening to him, you should be! So, check out my favorite -- "Good Man." You may know his new single "To the Dogs or Whoever," or give a close listen to one with some haunting lyrics - "The Temptation of Adam." The end of the world has never sounded so beautiful.

So, one of the things I've begun in 2008 is meeting up with a couple of friends for breakfast on Thursday mornings. We've had 2 meetings so far and I enjoy them. This is helping me establish my morning routines and we end up having insightful conversation. 1st meeting was about our goals for 2007. I think it helps to have people know what you're trying to accomplish - it makes me feel accountable to others besides just myself. Second meeting we talked about FairTax - heady, exciting stuff ;) It's a great concept - get paid your entire paycheck, pay taxes only on consumption on new items - but can it garner enough interest from people to convince our politicians to commit resources for a real analysis of it's efficacy? Who knows.

That's all for now. Enjoy the tunes, excuse my ramblings.

5 little ditties

Well, in previous social forums (Myspace, Facebook), I'd type out some new music recommendations. I figured an easy blog to get me in the spirit here would be to share with you all some of the songs running though my iTunes playlist lately. They may not be really new, but they are new to me. Hopefully they'll be new and good to you!

Ben Harper - "Fool for a Lonesome Train"
Great song - pretty chill, but it has a lot of emotion behind it.

Shelby Lynne - "Evil Man"
Nice simple, dirty blues song. dig.

Rufus Wainwright - "Across the Universe"
Yeah, it's a Beatles cover, but Rufus does it right. Really interesting.

Hope Waits - "Get Behind the Mule"
Where did this gal come from ? She's awesome...

The Real Tuesday Meld - "I Believe"
How can you not like a crazy song with lyrics like "I believe in anything if I believe that you believe in love." It's not a sappy song either. Check it out. Quirky

There you are - 5 little ditties.

Looking ahead to 2008!

Well, here is my first draft of goals and resolutions for 2008. Three cubed. Fun. I had a wonderful surprise birthday thrown for me by some very close friends, and it was awesome! I almost didn't show because I am sick. But, I showed, had a great time, and it was totally worth feeling this shitty today. They did a great job.

I heard from unexpected people this year - my date from the Christmas party, whom I didn't know until that night. My ex's sisters. A few newer friends in Columbia, and of course those who were at my party. That was very nice of all of them. I always worry, that despite having friends, I won't hear from any of them on my birthday. I like to matter to people. Lacking in contact were some high profile friends. Perhaps they were busy. Perhaps not. I'll hear from them soon. It's funny, but I think about that stuff.

I got a new tie from my parents, along with a gift card and my Green Bay Packers v Chiefs tickets (the game was about a month ago). Love it all.

I shaved my beard. This had not taken place since November 1999.

So, hopefully you'll be seeing more posts in 2008. I think I have more direction for my blog, and I'm looking forward to creating more posts.

Coming shortly, I hope to post:

Synopsis of 2007
Goals for 2008
Posts relating to what I talked about in my first post.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Genesis

My first blog entry.
